Kipyegon the commonwealth champion tore away from world record holder Genzebe Dibaba to whom she had lost in the world championships in Beijing last year.
22 year old Kipyegon delivered the 3rd gold for Kenya which currently is the first African country in the medal standings and 16th overall.

Dibaba had to contend with silver finishing in 4 minutes 10.27 seconds, while Jennifer Simpson of the United States finished third in 4 minutes 10.53 seconds.
